The Dog Power story began in 2010 when Kale purchased an eight-week old Siberian Husky puppy named Misty. His goal was to learn how to train and race with Misty, who he was convinced shared his goal of becoming a World Champion canicross and skijor racer. At the end of 2011, after realizing that Misty was much more interested in their shared passion of backcountry skiing high in the mountains above Lake City, Colorado, Kale shifted gears. In 2012 he began his quest to find and race with the fastest sled dogs in the world. In the summer of 2012, Kale purchased a 16-month old Eurohound named Quinn from the legendary open class sprint champion, Egil Ellis. After a fantastic 2012 season, Kale purchased Poppy from Egil and qualified for Team USA.
In 2013, Kale, Quinn and Pops were the only North Americans to race in all five nordic events at the 2013 IFSS Winter World Championships in North Pole, Alaska. Even with a 6th place finish in the two-dog Men’s Skijor and several other top ten finishes, Kale, Quinn and Pops were blown away by the amazing speed and power of the best teams from Norway, Finland and Sweden. What kind of dogs did they have and what were they doing differently? Kale’s mission shifted to helping others avoid the steep learning curve that he had experienced during his first three years of training and racing dogs. The world needed to have an instructive and emotional introduction into the modern breeds and the incredibly vast world of dog-powered sports. The community of dog-powered sports racers needed a voice. And newcomers to dog-powered sports needed to have a movie series that shared what the best in the world already know about breeding, training, connecting with and racing the fastest sled dogs on planet earth. In 2014, Kale hired neighbor, friend and talented filmmaker Jordan Schevene. Drone specialist and gifted camera operator, Maximilian Eckmann, joined the team at the 2015 IFSS Winter World Championships in the Black Forest of Germany. Award-winning writer Cally Carswell was hired in the fall of 2015 after the successful Kickstarter campaign. The festival cut of DP1 was completed in April 2016.
